Record number of visitors in February

Overseas visitors to Japan reached nearly 2.8million in February 2024, up 89% compared to the last February according to JNTO (Japan National Tourism Organization). This is also the largest number of foreign tourists ever recorded for one month since February 2020, when the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic was declared.

Visitors from South Korea, Taiwan, and China were major contributors, but also visitors from Southeast Asia, Europe, Australia, the Middle East, and the USA increased. Lately small villages in the Northern part of Japan, such as Hokkaido or the Tohoku area become popular among foreign tourists while large cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka are still their major travel destinations.
